The Max Rady College of Medicine and Shared Health are seeking an individual to provide outstanding leadership for the joint position of Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, and Provincial Medical Specialty Lead – Internal Medicine, Shared Health. Applications are invited from individuals holding a current full-time faculty position within the University of Manitoba and from external candidates who meet the requirements listed below. This full-time position is for a five-year term commencing January 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with rank, qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities
This role presents a unique opportunity to combine an academic position with provincial clinical leadership. As Department Head, the individual will be involved in providing programmatic and administrative oversight of a well-established University department built on teaching and research. As Provincial Medical Specialty Lead for Internal Medicine, the successful candidate will be involved in developing collaborative partnerships while driving strategic planning, quality improvement, patient safety and ensuring equitable clinical standards throughout Manitoba.

The University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine, is a major centre of medical education and research linked to many institutions throughout Canada and the world. It offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs.

Shared Health was established in 2018 as Manitoba’s Provincial Health Authority during a period of broad health system transformation. The organization is responsible for leading provincial planning and delivering provincial services to create equitable, safe, accessible, trusted, and sustainable pathways to care.

As the largest academic department of the Max Rady College of Medicine, the Department of Internal Medicine is made up of 18 sections, serving over 1.5 million people. The department’s world-renowned 407 faculty members (208 Geographic full time physicians; 188 Clinicians and NIL appointment physicians; 11 University of Manitoba Faculty association PhD Scientists) are dedicated to excellence in patient care, research and education, working across six clinical teaching units and three academic health centres. The Department of Internal Medicine trains physicians across all levels to a high degree of excellence. The Department’s education programs teach students the importance of patient-centered care, readying them to provide tertiary medicine in an effective and efficient way. In 2022/23 there were 125 residents in 19 Royal College training programs in the Department of Internal Medicine. In addition, the Department has two active Royal College approved Area of Focused Competency (AFC) programs (Hepatology and Interventional Cardiology) and 4 available Fellowship programs in Advance Training in Hematological Malignancy, Infection Prevention and Control, Movement Disorders and Systemic Therapy Specialist in Oncology.

The Department of Internal Medicine holds a strong commitment to research. As an academic department, it values the impact of research for our students, patients, community, and the university. By supporting its physicians in their research initiatives, the Department fosters an environment of continuous learning within a university and health care setting. The Department continues to engage in collaborative research initiatives with many partners throughout the world. Researchers within the Department have successfully competed for numerous grants throughout the year. In the past year, members of the Department have received 112 grants totaling $7,982,238 which are housed at the University of Manitoba. There are also numerous grants and clinical trials at multiple sites including Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and Seven Oaks Hospital.

As a member of the provincial clinical leadership team, the Internal Medicine Specialty Lead will be responsible for clinical planning across geographically diverse settings (urban, rural, and northern/remote settings), quality and standards, oversight for all aspects of health service delivery through developing consistent, high-quality services and equitable healthcare for all Manitobans. The Lead will work collaboratively to support the planning and implementation of Manitoba’s clinical and preventive services plan, including determining the priority and sequencing of quality improvement initiatives around the province.

Qualifications
Candidates must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and possess a FRCPC in Internal Medicine. From a clinical perspective, the successful candidate should have a broad understanding of practice in various settings to understand the diverse components of the department and health care needs.

The successful candidate will have experience in both Health System leadership and Academic Leadership. Leadership skills developed through a combination of formal training and hands-on experience are preferred, with the ability to energize, motivate, and supervise a diverse workforce. The candidate will have a strong willingness to learn and grow within the role.

The individual will balance innovation with practicality and feasibility for patient care, research, teaching and administration. The individual will demonstrate leadership, integrity, and commitment to clinical excellence and interdisciplinary patient-centered care. As Manitoba has a diverse population, including a large Indigenous population, the individual must demonstrate a deep understanding and ability to promote culturally safe care.

The candidate will have demonstrated commitment and passionate attitude to medical education, pre- and post-graduate teaching and training, and support, directly or indirectly, various forms of research activities. A capacity to build relationships and collaborate at all levels, within the department, across Departments and with other provincial organizations, are required.

The individual is expected to have strong communication skills, exhibit transparency, and a willingness to collaborate in a positive and equitable manner with various stakeholders and partners. Demonstrated conflict management skills with the ability to resolve conflict in a collaborative manner through effective communication and mediation skills are required.

Experience with principles of change management and government relations, as well as a strategic planning mindset, is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and varying complex issues is required.

The criteria to be used in assessing candidates for the Headship will include the applicant’s ability to provide strong leadership in teaching, research and service, the ability to represent the interests of the Department in working with the Dean and other Heads of Departments, the ability to foster and promote the success of the Department’s academic staff, the ability to sustain a positive working environment for faculty, support staff and graduate students, and the ability to respond effectively to both undergraduate and graduate student issues. Evidence of strong administrative and leadership skills is required.
