As a General Practitioner- Oncology Support in the Horizon Health Network, Saint John area (Region 2), the physician will work closely with the attending hematologist to deliver inpatient services to hematologic oncology patients within a regional interdisciplinary team setting. The General Practitioner will collaborate with the Hematologists for service delivery in the hematology inpatient setting and for select outpatient clinical encounters.

Hours of Work:
• Shifts are 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday to be provided between the hours of 8am – 5pm.
• 6 weeks of leave per year (i.e. vacation and CME). Any time away requires a request of leave to the Chief of Oncology and the Chief of Staff.

The GP Oncology Support physician will not take part or be responsible for the following:

• Oncology call schedule/weekend calls.
• Inpatient hematology consultations

• Assist with providing hospitalist care to patients admitted under the Hematology Oncology service Monday-Friday. The average workload is 8 inpatients, with a range of 5-12 inpatients.
• Perform patient procedures as part of their routine care such as bone marrow aspirate and biopsies, stem cell transplant infusions, etc. Appropriate training and supervision will be provided.
• Assist with responding to patients in the systemic therapy area or apheresis unit who are experiencing acute reactions to their treatment.
• Perform select procedures on outpatients (ie bone marrow biopsies) when time allows.

• To offer palliative symptom management and liaise with the division of palliative medicine when appropriate.
• Responsible for dictating and signing off clinical encounters and discharge summaries.
• Complete forms and necessary written referrals to help with patient discharge/transfer to other hospital as needed.
• Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values, and strategic directions.
• Other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Department head of Oncology and the Chief of Staff.

• Attend a minimum of one major continuing professional development event per year.
• Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Oncology.
• Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, the Medical Services Payment Act, and their regulations. Documents can be found under http://laws.gnb.ca/en/deplinks?subjectnumber=10
• Comply with the Health Authority bylaws, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures.
• Follow the Code of Ethics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the Canadian Medical Association.
• Registration with New Brunswick Medicare.

Additional Benefits
$50,000.00 accompanied by a 2 year return of service for eligible physicians, as approved by the Department of Health.

Qualification Requirements
Education
• Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick
• Member in good standing with the New Brunswick Medical Society.
• Active membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association.
• Verification of good standing within Professional Association (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; College of Family Physicians of Canada: American Board, or equivalent specialty association).
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills.
• Good attendance and work record.
• Physically able to perform assigned duties.
