Horizon Health Network is centralizing Thoracic Surgery services in Saint John (Region 2) and is actively recruiting full-time Thoracic Surgeons to reach a complement of 4 FTE. Join a division that believes in collaboration, teamwork, research, medical education, innovation, and excellence in clinical care. Our division has access to a recently upgraded fully integrated MIS Suite, da Vinci Xi robot and the Illumisite fluoroscopic navigational bronchoscopy platform. We foster multi-disciplinary team collaboration with Cardiac Surgery, Critical Care, Respirology, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. We frequently collaborate with ENT and Plastic Surgery on complex Oncology cases. Current Capital Projects at the Saint John Regional Hospital include a new Ambulatory Clinic, ICU, Endoscopy Suite, and Oncology Clinic. The Division is an active participant in the CATS (Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons) Database.

Members of the Division are encouraged to be part of the medical education program affiliated with Dalhousie University in addition to other allied health profession learners. Members are eligible for an academic appointment with Dalhousie University. Other opportunities to participate in medical education are available if desired.

Position Summary:

The Physician will deliver inpatient and outpatient services in Thoracic Surgery and provide on-call coverage with other members of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. A typical weekly schedule will include:

· daily inpatient rounds

· operating sessions as assigned by the OR Utilization Committee

· inpatient consultations

· hospital-based clinics

· office hours

· involvement in teaching medical students

· Endoscopy – Upper GI, Flexible Bronchoscopy, EBUS, EUS with ROSE support, Fluoroscopic Navigational Bronchoscopy

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Conduct an office-based practice to include the assessment and management of both new and follow-up patients.

· Provide ambulatory care in a clinic setting.

· Provide inpatient care including rounds on patients.

· Provide consultations to hospital-based patients as requested by attending staff.

· Provide on-call services during statutory holidays, evenings, and weekends as part of the on-call schedule for the Division.

· Practice in a collaborative fashion as a member of an interdisciplinary team and consult with members of other health professions as appropriate.

· Report all absences – planned and unforeseen – in writing to the Medical Director-Saint John, Department Head of Surgery and Division Head of Thoracic Surgery.

· Negotiate planned service gaps in advance to ensure coverage of services can be arranged when the Physician is absent.

· Participate in using departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure expected standards of care are achieved.

· Participate in Departmental and Divisional educational activities under supervision of the Department Head of Surgery and Division Head of Thoracic Surgery.

· Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Horizon Health Network’s mission, values, and strategic directions.

· Within the confines of this scope of practice and position description, provide other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Head of the Department of Surgery – Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery, the Chief of Staff, Medical Director-Saint John, and/or the Vice President of Medical Affairs.

· Participate in teaching other members of health professions in subjects related to Thoracic Surgery.

· Maintain all patient records in the office and the hospital in accordance with the Horizon Health Network bylaws, medical staff rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

· As this job is remunerated on an Alternate Funding Program there are clinical deliverables related to this agreement.

· Members will embody principles of leadership and have a commitment to medical education

· Members will foster enhancing clinical care through ongoing development of advanced clinical techniques.

Remuneration
Standard remuneration for this position is based on a recently renewed, competitive New Brunswick Medicare Alternate Funding Plan for Thoracic Surgery. Office overhead stipend is part of the compensation package. In addition, there is a Mandated On-call stipend.

Additional Benefits
· $50,000.00 accompanied by a 2-year return of service for eligible physicians, as determined by the Department of Health.

· Moving Expense Allowance reimbursement of up to $8,000 for eligible physicians. 
Qualification Requirements
Education
A Medical Degree is required 
Experience
· Certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Thoracic Surgery or equivalent.

· Must be eligible or hold a valid license to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick

· Must be eligible or be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Medical Society.

· Must have current malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) appropriate to the category of practice.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.

· Good attendance and work record.

· Physically able to perform assigned duties.
