The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is currently recruiting for the position of Chief, Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM). This role requires an academic paediatric laboratory medicine physician with proven leadership expertise combined with the ability to lead transformative change and foster innovation. The Chief of DPLM reports to the Chief Medical Officer for the clinical, research, education and administrative activities of DPLM in support of the mission and strategic directions of SickKids.

The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized leader, scholar and respected clinician. The successful candidate must have the leadership qualities and management skills necessary to direct a large department, while fostering an environment of academic and clinical excellence. They will have the ability to take the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine to a new level of international recognition and academic achievement.

The successful candidate must:
• hold a medical degree or equivalent and must have subspecialty training and Royal College (or equivalent) certification in a discipline within laboratory medicine;
• be qualified to practice medicine and be licensed, or eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario;
• be expected to hold a position in the Research Institute of the hospital and be eligible for appointment as a full-time faculty member within the department of laboratory medicine and pathobiology of the University of Toronto at the rank of associate or full professor;
• have an active laboratory medicine practice with an international reputation for excellence, including evidence of excellence in teaching and research;
• effectively collaborate and build partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders (both internal and external), as well as sharp negotiation and influencing skills, strong planning and organizational skills and clear conceptual thinking skills;
• demonstrate self-awareness of personal values, principles, strengths, and limitations, and actively seek opportunities for personal learning;
• consistently demonstrate behaviours supporting values of compassion, inclusion, innovation, integrity, collaboration, and excellence;
• demonstrate systems level critical thinking that challenges the status quo to identify issues, solve problems, and design effective processes across systems while maintaining respectful partnerships;
• have a proven record motivating, inspiring, and leading team members to do their best, while removing barriers they may face in their daily work;
• must be proficient in English;

Estimated remuneration will be in a range of $400,000 – $450,000 per annum and will be commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be eligible for a benefits package which includes medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, pension plan and which may include a relocation package. This is a full-time permanent role.

DPLM is a valuable and integral component of the SickKids team generating original research and providing timely specialized diagnostic services including pathology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics.
