full time Physician - Pediatrics at Northern Health Authority
Prince George, British Columbia
Job ID: 7522

UHNBC is seeking 2 Paediatricians! New grads welcome – bring a friend!

Join a collegial team of General Pediatricians at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) in Prince George, British Columbia. This is the regional referral centre for northern British Columbia, and is affiliated with the Northern Medical Program of the University of British Columbia (UBC). The UHNBC group of six general pediatricians serves a geographical area of approximately 600,000 km and a population of approximately 300,000.

This hospital has a state-of-the-art Level II B NICU with nine single room pods which include sleeping space for parents (single room neonatal care). This NICU is the first of its kind in BC. The successful applicant must be competent in Level II B/Level III neonatal intensive care. Neonatal emergencies constitute approximately 50% of the on-call with the other 50% being general pediatric emergencies in children 0-16 years of age. The pediatric inpatient unit has twelve family suites. The Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit offers clinics including in diabetes, oncology, asthma, autism and complex behavioral conditions. In addition, the Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit hosts many subspecialist visiting clinics from BC Children’s Hospital. (including cardiology, respirology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, nephrology, hematology, genetics). The Maternal Child team promotes family centered health care. There are opportunities for those interested in the following specialized areas: Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect/child maltreatment, Eating Disorders, Complex Developmental Behavioural Conditions. An interest or expertise in any of these areas would be an asset. In addition, there is the potential for outreach and telehealth Pediatric clinics throughout northern BC, as well as for telehealth appointments with children living in First Nations/reserve communities in northern BC.

UHNBC has an adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit, and the pediatricians work with the psychiatrists to provide a holistic approach to children and youth with mental health issues. The Prince George Child Development Centre serves children with special needs. The Child Development Centre is staffed by specialized occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language therapists. There is also a community-based multidisciplinary Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Clinic, and a community-based mental health centre for children and youth. There are many children with developmental or behavioral challenges in the community.

The successful applicant will be involved in teaching UBC Northern Medical Program medical students, Prince George Family Practice residents and UBC Pediatric residents from BC Children’s Hospital. The successful applicant can establish their own private practice as consultations are abundant. Pediatric income can be from different sources: fee-for-service (topped up by a rural retention premium), sessional payments, MOCAP/on call payment, teaching and NITAOP (funding for travel to provide outreach services). In addition, there is a generous continuing medical education allowance from the Northern Health Authority in addition to that provided by Doctors of BC.

The range of pathology in pediatric patients in Prince George and the surrounding area is great. There is a need for a passionate, committed community Pediatrician to join our group in continuing to improve the quality of life of the children and youth of northern BC.
