Academic Spine Surgeon

Applications are invited for the position of academic spine surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital, a fully affiliated hospital with the University of Toronto.

The effective date of this appointment is to be determined based on the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will have obtained specialist certification in either orthopaedic surgery or neurosurgery and have completed at least an additional year of fellowship training in complex and/or minimally invasive spine surgery. The successful candidate will be required to manage the complete spectrum of spine pathologies and work in a close collaborative fashion with the existing practice. Candidates are required to have advanced research training as well as evidence of excellence in teaching.

The successful candidate must hold a Fellowship in either Orthopaedic Surgery or Neurosurgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) and hold, or be eligible for an independent practice license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He/she will be eligible for appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto at a rank commensurate with his/her qualification and academic achievements, starting with Assistant Professor.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma centre located in downtown Toronto, providing primary, secondary and tertiary care services for Toronto, Southern Ontario and beyond. The Department of Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital enjoys a proven track record in tertiary care surgical services with strengths in each of the surgical specialties. Both the Divisions of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital are large academic units with fully appointed clinical facilities, large in patient services, and new experimental and clinical research facilities. The Institution’s research profile is well established and has been further strengthened by the new research facility, The Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Currently, the Division of Neurosurgery and the Division Orthopedic Surgery have an outstanding relationship and collaborative practice is the expectation.

Salary will be in the range of $200,000 – $400,000, commensurate with qualification and experience. Estimate based on fee for service billings.
