Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

Island Health’s Child, Youth & Family Mental Health Services are seeking a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist to work in an inpatient setting with children and youth in Victoria, BC.

The Ledger Program is an island wide resource that provides acute, in-patient; hospital based psychiatric services for children and youth. We provide stabilization, assessment, treatment planning and short-term interventions for children and youth aged 6 to 16 years. The Ledger Program is based on a philosophy of care that is Trauma Informed, and Least Restrictive. The care delivery model is premised on a collaborative inter-disciplinary team.

There are three Inpatient Units at Ledger. Two are age specific – a Child Unit (up to age 12), and a Youth Unit (12 and up to the 17th birthday). These programs provide services that include assessment, stabilization treatment and planning. A Special Care Unit provides 2 inpatient beds for children and youth who are experiencing a mental health crisis or an acute psychiatric illness that require stabilization and a secure setting. There are a total of 14 funded beds in the program.

Assessment, consultation and treatment are provided to children & youth who are experiencing an emotional, psychiatric, or severe behavioural disturbance. As this is considered tertiary level services it is expected that a mental health assessment and treatment has been initiated in the client’s home community and that referrals are made to CYFMHS due to a need for more intensive review, consult and service.

A multidisciplinary team comprised of Child & Youth Counsellors, Registered Nurses, Child Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Registered Social Workers, Neuropsychologists, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Educators deliver services.

The ongoing involvement and participation of families, community physicians and mental health professionals is essential to support the continuing needs of all clients. CYFMHS goal is to involve all significant members of the clients’ family and support systems in our process. We communicate frequently throughout the assessment and treatment period. There are regularly planned conferences at various stages of the treatment process and we make available comprehensive written reports.

Parents and family members participate as equal members of the treatment teams.

Flexibility within a growing and changing clinical environment, and comfort with a collaborative and consultative service, are imperative. Other services provided by CYFMHS include, Outpatient, and Crisis services.
