ROLE DESCRIPTION

In accordance with the Standards of Practice and the established Visions and Values of Providence Health Care, the psychiatrist that accepts this position will:

- Provide geriatric psychiatry assessment and treatment as part of an interdisciplinary team in the ElderCare Clinics at St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) and/or at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ). This team will receive referrals from the hospital acute services, from geriatricians within the clinic, from community primary care physicians and from community health units.

- Provide geriatric psychiatry assessment and treatment on an outreach basis as part of the geriatric psychiatry outreach team (GPOT) at SPH and MSJ, collaborating and working with the outreach nurse(s) and other interdisciplinary team members. This team will receive referrals from community primary care physicians, from acute inpatient units at SPH/MSJ and from community health units.

- Provide geriatric psychiatry assessment and treatment as part of the Shared Care Medical-Psychiatry (SCAMP) unit at MSJ. The psychiatrist will provide relief coverage when other service members are unavailable.

- Provide consultations and follow up as appropriate in collaboration with primary care, with members of the interdisciplinary ambulatory service team, as well as with acute hospital and community services.

- Be expected to support educational opportunities for the community regarding management of patients with late-life psychiatric illnesses.

- Be expected to be involved in teaching specific students, residents and fellows assigned to the service.

- Be expected to participate in evaluation and quality improvement programs for the service.

- Will participate in the on-call schedule.

The model of care is collaborative. The SPH and MSJ geriatric psychiatry teams will closely collaborate with: primary care physicians relating to SPH and MSJ and community health units, other specialist physicians from the mental health teams, the Vancouver Coastal Mental Health Central Intake Service and SPH/MSJ Acute Care services. The geriatric psychiatry team at PHC provides care for older adults with mental health needs who live in the City of Vancouver.

QUALIFICATIONS

- A medical degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. – Specialist’s qualifications in psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or eligibility to write our CPS specialty exams in Psychiatry). – Ability to meet Privileging and Credentialing requirements for Providence Health Care. – A completed Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry is required. – Interest and/or experience in electroconvulsive therapy and other neurostimulation modalities is desirable. – Interest and/or experience in substance abuse treatment is desirable. – Demonstrates an ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting. – Shows a commitment to work towards innovations in care. – Apply for and gain clinical faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia Medical School Department of Psychiatry: http://www.med.ubc.ca/clinical-faculty/becoming-clinical-faculty/

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The psychiatrist reports to the Head of the PHC Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, for their professional role. The psychiatrist will also report to the Physician Leader, Geriatric Psychiatry of the PHC Elder Care Program for their clinical service delivery role.

COMPENSATION

The psychiatrist will provide a minimum of eight half-days per week in a blended billing model (sessional and fee-for-service). The psychiatrist is responsible for their own billings.
